BMZ USA, Inc. develops and produces high-tech lithium-ion battery systems and is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team.BMZ USA is one of the four development and manufacturing sites of BMZ Group that employs almost 2,000 people worldwide.In the last 5 years, we have made significant progress in transitioning BMZ USA from a sales office into a development and manufacturing company. But we have just started: New customers and double-digit growth are what we have seen and what we are positioned for.A friendly and safe working environment and a place to grow is what we offer. We are looking for a professional with experience and the mindset to not only execute the daily tasks but also to take on new challenges as we continue our path to become the biggest supplier for customized li-ion battery pack solutions.POSITION SUMMARYOversees the electrical hardware, product firmware, and test systems software aspects of product development of lithium-ion batteries, production test, and energy storage solutions. Manages electrical design (schematic, PCBA layout), firmware development, internal test software development, prototyping, product testing, and validation activities of a team of Electrical, Embedded Systems, and Test engineers (4-8 members). Coordinates schedules and deliverable commitments with the Program Management team for internal and external customers. Reports ongoing status to Directors and General Manager.JOB FUNCTIONSInclude the following, but other duties may apply:

  • Manages the Electrical & Embedded Engineering department, which spans electrical design, firmware/software development, electrical testing, and product validation functions.
  • Prioritize projects, allocate people and equipment, provide technical guidance, and meet program milestones on-time and on-budget.
  • Contribute to the technical design, developing embedded electronic hardware and software components. Outsource and manage external development when deemed necessary.
  • Oversee the planning and enactment of product development processes, including design, prototyping, testing, and validation processes.
  • Monitor KPIs and performance metrics for the Electrical & Embedded Systems group.
  • Support BMZ quality practices and processes, such as APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning), DFMEA, manufacturability audits, as appropriate.
  • Provide weekly reports of ongoing group status and activities to Group Leader peers and executive management.
  • Maintain an awareness of customer requirements and any complaints to identify areas for development or improvement.
  • Be able to work with various design sites globally.
  • Establish a culture of learning, openness and accountability.
  • Performs any additional related duties as assigned.MINIMUM ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
    • BSEE or BSCS, or equivalent, with 10+ years of relevant work experience.
    • 2+ years managing a team, or 5+ years in a senior engineering role.
    • Demonstrable experience designing and validating embedded systems, including firmware development.
    • Demonstrable experience overseeing the design and validation of electrical PCBA.
    • Demonstrable experience in a schedule-driven, product development environment.
    • Experience developing requirements and verification test plans.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
    • Outstanding organization, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
    • Familiarity with electronics packaging and thermal management.
    • Familiarity with power electronics design and considerations for integration.
    • Familiarity with lithium batteries & battery management systems (with specific experience desired with Texas Instruments solutions such as protection ICs and impedance-track fuel gauges).ADDITIONAL VALUED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
      • Strong understanding of digital and analog circuitry.
      • Strong understanding of DC power electronics.
      • Strong understanding of RTOS-based firmware.
      • Experience with electrical CAD modeling systems (Altium).
      • Strong quantitative, design, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
      • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

The noise levels in areas of the manufacturing facility frequently may exceed the normal dBA. Work conditions may include elevated noise levels requiring hearing protection. While performing the duties of this job, the employee could be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and risk of electrical shock.
